★ About Jean Friesewinkel & Strategyist

Strategyist was born out of long years of reading tech blogs, wanting to join the conversation and contribute my own thoughts. It focuses on discussing the strategies of top technology firms and startups.

Since I live in the same plethora of information as you, I will always do my best to save your reading time by structuring my posts with titles and lists where appropriate, highlighting key ideas and providing direct links to external content whenever my post is more of a commentary than original content. For this I have adopted a format similar to what John Gruber first introduced on Daring Fireball, where my own posts are preceded by stars (★) and external links by right arrows (→).

The easiest way to keep reading Strategyist in the long run is through the RSS feed, as you’ll get both my own posts and items with external links, which will include both the direct link to the source and usually a summary of key points and my own thoughts about the topic. Of course you can also follow strategyist on Twitter if you prefer.

About me

I’m Jean Friesewinkel, a Belgian expat from Brussels in my late twenties now living in the beautiful city of Paris. I’m an engineer in energy and applied mathematics. My day job is at a top-3 management consulting firm where I focus on corporate strategy and private equity projects.

Please keep in mind that this blog is personal in no way affiliated with or related to my employer, and therefore the views expressed here are my own only.

When I’m not writing on Strategyist or working, I share my free time between three passions: epicurism, entrepreneurship, and exploring the world.

  • Epicurism: I love good food and wine. And since I think food is never as good as when it is prepared by friends, for friends, “avec amour” — with a dose of love — I try  to cook as often as I can. I also used to organize wine-tasting classes.
  • Entrepreneurship: whenever the opportunity presents itself, I try to solve problems by building a productized solution, either through coding or modelling. I also spend hours (litterally) every week reading about tech startups, and part of this blog’s mission is to curate the best content I come accross.
  • Exploring the world: I travel a lot as well. Whenever I do that, I try to bring back some good pictures. I love photography, although I’m certainly at the most amateur level.

Elsewhere

Strategyist is my blog, and where I want to consolidate more and more of my content, but you can also find me elsewhere on the web:

This blog is obviously powered by WordPress, and I want to thank Matt, his team and the WordPress community because they are not only the tech enablers but also the ones who inspired me to start a blog in the first place.

The site runs on regular Dreamhost hosting (referral link – please click this if you want to support Strategyist)

The theme is Lightword by Andrei Luca.

Some key plugins:

On the “what you see” side:

  • Lifestream powers the right sidebar by fetching my activities from various sites
  • WP-footnotes makes it easy to push a sentence out of the flow when I digress too much (even for myself ;-))
  • DF-style linked list powers part of the external permalink functionality (at the feed level)
